Ashburnham Garden # 1019 And Transition Town Peterborough, Peterborough Permaculture Demonstration Garden

_______________________________________________________________

Peterborough now has an official Permaculture demonstration garden, which is part of the Ashburnham Community Garden LETS # 1019 on Ashburnham Drive, across the road from Ecology Park, south of the little convenience store. The garden will be run by the Transition Town Peterborough Permaculture Group that I am responsible for organizing. I am looking for people to join the group, so if you are interested, let me know and I will send you details!

There are no responsibilities, only coming out whenever you want to learn, teach and connect with the earth. I will also be holding permaculture video viewings occasionally and a Permaculture Town Hall is planned for the Library Auditorium starting at 7:00 pm Wed Jan 14/09.

The garden is on city land, and is supported by the city, with the city supplying water and potentially other materials such as mulch and compost. There is some work to do, but I am looking to meet with everyone interested in helping with the garden to determine a direction.

So far, this has been decided:

The garden will be a self-sustaining, no till, perennial polyculture plot, based on permaculture principles and natural farming methods. After the initial inputs, it will be largely self-sufficient, and will build and maintain the soil. There will be a couple of trees, a few shrubs, and many perennial plants, including vines, ground covers, etc. There are some restrictions on what species can be planted, because the site is apparently very wet in the spring, and thus, can only support species that tolerate wet feet part of the year. This still leaves many possibilities.

I would really love it if everyone could come out and discuss and plan what we're going to do this year to get the garden prepared for spring. This is a community project requiring community input and action! Currently the space is occupied by ragweed, so Ian and I are thinking we'll create a thick sheet mulch of sorts to smother it all, with cardboard, compost, wood chips, straw or whatever we can get.

Peace,
